Local municipalities are mandated to: Nelson MandelaPass by-laws - local laws and regulations about any of the functions they are responsible for. By-laws may not go against any national laws. Approve budgets and development plans - every year a municipal budget must be passed that sets down how money will be raised and spent.

The municipality must also approve the Integrated Development Plan (IDP). Impose rates and other taxes, for example property tax. Charge service fees for using municipal services like water, electricity, libraries, and so on. Impose fines for people who break municipal by-laws, for example traffic fines or littering.

  • Historical and other places of interest: The Flood Route commemorates the tragic flood of 1981 and gives visitors an impression of the devastation that occurred. Three full-time guides are employed to guide tourists along the route. Matjiesfontein, a tiny piece of Victorian England and a national monument, is said to be the most haunted place in the Great Karoo. It has a rich history, peppered with romance, magic and murder. About 17 km from town is a guest farm that offers ecological and geological hiking trails. Popular annual events include the grueling 80 km Karoo Marathon during the September school holidays and the Karoo Festival. Click here to see our photo albums.
